Toxic or Poisonous Household Items

Certain household items are poisonous if swallowed. It’s important to keep the following safety tips in mind, as toxin-related injuries are the third most common reason kids end up in the hospital, especially those aged zero to four.

Beware of these common household poisons:

  • Air fresheners
  • Paint
  • Bathroom and kitchen cleaners
  • Medication
  • Cosmetics
  • Bug spray
  • Bleach
  • Methylated spirits
  • Oils
  • Pesticides
  • Chlorine / pool and spa chemicals

If you come across any of these items in your home, stay well clear, and inform an adult where you found it. NEVER attempt to use any of these items.

Button Batteries

Button batteries are the small round batteries that go in watches and other small devices like TV remotes. They’re dangerous because they’re small, and can be really harmful if swallowed. Don’t put these batteries anywhere near your mouth, and if you have little siblings, keep anything that uses button batteries out of reach.

In an Emergency: Get Help Fast

If a button battery is swallowed, act quickly.

  • Tell an adult and get to the hospital:
    • Do not induce vomiting. Head to the nearest hospital emergency department without a second thought.
  • Give details:
    • Tell the doctors about the button battery.
  • Don’t eat:
    • No eating or drinking until a doctor says it is safe to do so.

Preventing Cuts

Cuts are a common injury around the house, but with a little safety knowledge, they are easily preventable. Here are some helpful tips to prevent yourself from getting cut:

  • Use plastic cups
  • Keep rough and tumble outside, away from any windows.
  • Stay away from jewellery.
  • Only use scissors with adult supervision.
  • Keep an eye out for anything sharp around the house and play areas – if you do come across something sharp or dangerous, tell an adult straight away.

Remember, your home is your safe zone, and with a little detective work and some safety smarts, we can keep it that way.
