Know When to Call 111
Understanding Emergencies:
Before an emergency occurs, preparation is our best tool. Understanding what qualifies as an emergency and learning how to call 111 are essential steps in being ready for unexpected situations.
Defining an Emergency:
An emergency is a serious and unexpected event that could be dangerous and requires immediate attention. Examples include:
- Uncontrolled fires
- Serious accidents and injuries
- Situations where someone can’t breathe or is struggling to do so
If you’re not sure if it is an emergency or not, call 111 and ask. The operator will help you.
Calling 111:
In the event of an emergency, the first step is to inform an adult promptly. They will assess the situation and determine if it qualifies as an emergency. If so, they can call 111 and notify anyone else who needs to be aware of the situation.
However, if you are in a situation where there is no adult, or if it is the adult who requires help, then you will have to call 111 yourself. Here is what to do when you call 111:
- They will ask what service you require:
- The operator, the person on the other side of the phone, will ask about the type of services you require.
- They will inquire whether you need an ambulance, Police, or Fire services.
- Don’t worry if you’re unsure:
- If you’re unsure about the specific services you need, that’s okay.
- The operator is there to help. They will ask you questions to understand the situation better.
- Stay calm, and do your best to answer the operator’s questions accurately.
- Follow Instructions:
- Do everything the operator advises you to do.
- The operator will want to know where you are so they can send help. It is therefore important to know your phone number, suburb, town/district.
Remember, having to make a 111 call is a rare situation, but being informed about the process and staying calm can make a significant difference. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about anything, call 111 and the operator will assist you and guide you through what you need to do.
